![]() Why is every great chance a‘ golden’ opportunity? Why is every cherished incident a ‘golden’ memory? Why is every phenomenal feat written down in the pages of history in ‘golden’ words? Why is every glorious age remembered as the ‘golden’ era? Gold. Always. Why? It always baffled us why that on ecolor, one metal, that one element was so overrated and overvalued when there were a million others available. It puzzled us no end. Until IMT-Chakravyuh and then Sprint – SP Jain happened. Epiphany dawned, ‘eureka’ was experienced. And then it was all so clear. Gold is the color your skin is roasted to, when you spend three consecutive days in the sun in an open field. Gold is the color your bruise turns to the day after the injury, when it hurts most, when it gives sweet pain. Gold is the blinders that block the taunts and chants of the hundred strong ‘home’ opposition and lets filter the hoarse cheers of encouragement from the handful of your contingent members.Gold is the tonic that lets you sprint for those last 20 meters, that makes you dash back for that one last defense in stoppage time, and then once more. Gold is the consistency of salivain a parched mouth. Gold is the anesthetic that helps you get over that piercing pain in your abdomen. Gold is that tangy taste in your mouth when you bite into your medal. Gold is the energy that makes you jump to the highest pedestal on the podium, when you could barely stand a minute ago. Gold is what you get when you’ve experienced all that. And more.
Chakravyuh–IMT, Ghaziabad
Football (Winners):
The team earned the affectionate sobriquet of ‘Chhote Santrey’ due to their characteristic orange jerseys. But that wasn’t all it won – it won matches, hearts and trophies. The team did not concede a single goal in the entire tournament and banged in 13 goals in 4 matches. They were quite literally, the talk of the town, and you could hear random people discussing total ‘oranje’ football at canteens and hostels. Special Mention: Ikampreet ‘Rocket’ Singh. For tearing apart teams single handedly. He may be banned on humanitarian grounds if he continues to mercilessly slaughter oppositions like he did there.
Table Tennis (Winners): After watching the MDI TT Team decimate its opponents in its very first game, all other teams had all but given up hope of winning the event. We have to respect their prescience and judgment. How right they were. The team sleep walked through its games and the one complaint they had from the tournament was lack of competition. Special Mention: Vipul for flawless play and exemplary sportsmanship. And Prerna – for being the reason behind the retirement of many(Male) players from the game out of sheer embarrassment. Ramy for winning a couple of games for MDI – purely by his cheering.
Overall (Runners Up): The best ever performance by MDI in what is undisputedly the Olympics of Business Schools. We hope to better this next year.
SPrint – SP JainIMR, Mumbai
Football (Winners): Despite much poorer playing conditions and initial coordination problems, the team found its groove and showed its Champion fabric in the final. After having dominated the entire match, MDI found itself trailing 0-1 to NMIMS with 10 minutes to go. But the santreys showed everybody where the pulpwas and after theblitzkrieg that followed NMIMS found out that they had lost by a score of 1 goal to 3. Theystill don’t know what hit them. Somebody please forward this mail to NMIMS. Special Mention: The entire team – for showing that IMT wasn’t afluke, and for showing how grit can be mixed with pretty football to get effective football. Cricket (Winners):
This is the classic underdog story. The team went into the tournament with a firmly established reputation of not winning matches. If they manage to turn up for it, that is. But all credit to the team for sealing all mouths shut through consistent and focused performances. The team did not disintegrate when the chips were down and twice – in the semi finalsand the finals, it fought back like true champions. To make it all perfect, the wining the final was achieved by a four off the very last ball. PS: The cricket team is also there as on why none of the Sprint Squad members have fingernails right now. Special Mention: The team again, for sticking it out through thick and thin. Table Tennis, Women(Winners): The team of Prerna Mathur and Ruchira Khanna showed brilliant team spirit and coordination to win the event. So strong were they, that even in the finals, against what was supposedly their biggest challenge in the tournament, they won through a clean sweep by winning their first three matches in a series of five. They had more time for shopping and going to the beach that way, they said.
400m, Men’s (Gold): Ramandeep Singh provided Sprint what was undoubtedly, one of the highlights of the event. The frail, short, balding man from MDI stood barefoot at the starting line, dwarfed by muscular athletes on either side of him in imported running shoes. The shoes seemed well worth forthe first 300m of the race. Ramy was last, and with the apparent difficulty with which he seemed to be running, even finishing the race seemed a bonus. And then Ramy decided to run. Within the next 50 meters and 7.35 seconds he was first. The MDI contingent broke out in applause and almost drowned out the thud from people’s jaws hitting the floor. Ramy maintained his lead and finished first with another thud. (This time Ramy had collapsed to the ground). You did us proud Ramy. Breaking News: Bernie Ecclestoneis flying down next month to meet Ramandeep and ask him where he found that extra gear from.
Lawn Tennis, Men(Runners Up): Siddharth Parmar and Ikampreet Singh aced their way to the final where they fell at the last hurdle. Swimming: We won a handful of medals in swimming. Swati Chauhan, MDI’s sole females winner won medals in both her events – a silver and a bronze. The men finished second in relay.
Overall (Fourth): MDI finished fourth overall, missing third position by a whisker. We promise to put in our all for a better finish next time.
